You Can Change


• It’s easy to forget that we can change. It’s easy to become complacent in life and accept our circumstances and the ways we think and behave in the world. It’s easy to forget that we can change, that we can improve our behaviors and alter the direction of our lives and relationships. And so we often give up working towards change. We accept the way we’ve always been and assume this is how we’ll always be. We convince ourselves: This is just how I live my life; how I talk to people; how I deal with problems; how I spend my week; how I think of myself and the world—meanwhile, we know there’s room for improvement.

• There are ways to change. Although we may have felt stuck, we don’t have to stay stuck. There are ways to change. There are ways that work. In the field of psychology, we have been actively developing and testing methods for how to help children, adolescents, and adults change in important ways to improve their emotional and behavioral health and wellbeing; we know how to help people alter negative patterns in their thinking, behaviors, and interpersonal relationships—we know how to help people craft a happier, more meaningful life they’ve always wanted.

• Other people have changed their lives, and so can you. Despite going through difficult times, other people have changed their lives and found what they are looking for. And so can you. Isn’t it time to work towards change?
